Giving Food X-Ray Vision: Orbem, a Munich-based firm, has done something almost impossible: it has taken hospital-grade MRI equipment, compressed a 25-minute scan to less than one second, and placed it on food production lines to detect quality flaws inside eggs, avocados, watermelons, and mangoes in real time. Since its commercial introduction in 2023, Orbem has scanned over 200 million eggs, more MRI images than the whole global healthcare industry, to create what it says is the world's largest biological imaging dataset. The Problem With Free Tools

There is a reason every major agtech platform offers its core product at low or zero cost. The data collected from farms is the revenue model. A farmer using a precision application platform is often simultaneously supplying the training data that makes that platform more valuable to every other customer. The farmer rarely knows this. They almost never benefit from it.

European farmers decline to share field data at the rates that North American platforms achieve, not because they are conservative but because the ownership question is unresolved. What Sweden Built Instead

Agronod has received SEK 120 million from the Swedish Board of Agriculture, thanks to EU rural development funds. What sets it apart from other commercial platforms is that it's a neutral farm data hub owned by the farmers themselves.

Agronod gathers, organises, and verifies agricultural data on behalf of Swedish farmers. It is co-owned by Lantmännen, Arla, the Federation of Swedish Farmers, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and five additional institutional co-owners. Every farmer chooses what information is shared, with whom, and for what reason. No information is removed from the platform without permission. It cannot be accessed by any commercial partner without a farmer-approved agreement.

Agrosfär, a climate computation tool that cuts the time required to compute and report a farm's carbon footprint from several days to about 20 minutes, is the immediate practical result. In order to lessen the administrative burden of data entry that presently deters smaller farms from using digital systems, Lantmännen and Agronod partnered in October 2025 to automate crop production data collection throughout its cooperative membership.

By 2025, Agronod was being used by about 3,000 farmers in Sweden.

The European Argument

Agronod is currently active in Sweden only. But the model it represents, farmer-owned, cooperatively governed, EU-funded data infrastructure, is precisely what Release 3 argues European agriculture needs to build AI models that actually perform in European field conditions.
