Dairy Without the Cow: Your sports drink's whey protein might soon have never been near a cow. The protein transition is happening more quickly than the discussion surrounding it. This is concerning for European food producers, investors, and lawmakers. The European Innovation Council Accelerator Programme has granted €12.5 million to the Dutch startup Vivici, bringing the total funding to €32.5 million. This funding aims to scale up the synthesis of dairy proteins using precision fermentation. It closed in February with the backing of ABP, one of the biggest pension funds in the world, along with Invest-NL, DSM-Firmenich, and Fonterra. Vivici has achieved FDA GRAS certification for beta-lactoglobulin and self-GRAS status for lactoferrin. A agreement is already in place for production in Indiana, USA, and its European co-manufacturing partners can produce at industrial scale. This approach by Vivici uses 86% less water and has a 68% smaller carbon footprint than traditional dairy protein production. These claims were confirmed by life cycle assessment.

$240 Million. One Broken Promise: Monarch Tractor was on Time magazine's best inventions list in 2023. Two years later it shut its headquarters, auctioned its equipment and sold its technology to Caterpillar. The Los Angeles Times post-mortem is the most honest account yet of what went wrong. It is worth reading in full. The autonomous features just didn't work as reliably as I hoped they would. Foxconn, the manufacturer, has halted production. Co-founder Carlo Mondavi was let go after he disagreed with the CEO's focus on a software-first strategy for addressing hardware issues. One early adopter who tested the tractor for three years said simply, "I wouldn't let anyone else near it. $240 million has been raised. A valuation of $500 million. Dealers ended up with machines that just couldn't live up to the promises their own sales team eventually acknowledged in writing. The Monarch story isn’t about a bad idea at all. Autonomous farm machinery sounds like a great idea! It's really about the difference between a great pitch and an actual product that works. About who ends up bearing the cost when that difference never gets bridged.

Editing 100 Genes at Once: Typically, gene editing only alters a single gene. Rainbow Crops is going through a hundred changes all at once, and the difference is huge. The seed round of the Belgian startup, which was spun out of the VIB research institute in 2025, raised $11.25 million. The round was led by LIFTT EuroInvest, a partnership between the European Investment Bank and Italian VC firm. Other participants included present investors Agri Investment Fund and Paulig's venture arm PINC, as well as Corteva Catalyst and the Gates Foundation-backed project fund. Rainbow Crops develops what its CEO terms "rationally designed genetic diversity" to enhance yield, drought tolerance, and heat resilience in maize, sorghum, and rice by combining artificial intelligence to map intricate genetic networks, multiplex gene editing to alter 50-100 genes concurrently, and high-throughput screening of up to 16,000 plants simultaneously. There is equal weight given to the business model: Instead of competing with seed businesses, Rainbow Crops licenses altered traits to them. They charge upfront R&D expenses during development and collect royalties on commercialised varieties. A relationship with a large maize seed firm is imminent. In the prior newsletter titled "The Genome Editors in Ghent", we initially discussed Rainbow Crops. The solution is starting to appear with this rise.

Giving Operators Their Energy Back: John Deere's Model Year 2027 8 Series update is making a subtle yet important point: when it comes to tractors, the operator is the most crucial technology. The MY27 8R, 8RT, and 8RX lineup, which ranges from 250 to 410 horsepower, features a revamped CommandARM control layout. It also introduces three new CommandX gearbox drive lever options that provide more customisation. Plus, there's the optional Reactive Command Steering that automatically recentres the wheel and lets you adjust the feedback settings. The tractors come ready for autonomy, equipped with the G5 Plus display, and are compatible with AutoTrac Turn Automation, AutoPath, and Machine Sync. Plus, there's the option for JDLink Boost satellite connectivity, which ensures reliable data capture even in areas where mobile coverage is spotty. These updates came from what customers had to say about their everyday experiences, focusing more on usability than on big hardware changes or horsepower. Each improvement might seem small on its own, but when you add them up over hundreds of hours in the seat each season, they really make a difference. US customers now get a three-year, 1,500-hour PowerGard extended warranty included in the base price, and Canada will be next! Feeling fatigued really impacts your productivity. Deere is looking at that like it's an engineering problem.

A Problem With Two Names

The two pressures on European arable farmers are not new, but they are converging. Skilled operators are more difficult to find and more expensive to keep each season. And decades of heavy machinery have compacted soils, making them less permeable and productive than they should be. A conventional 12-tonne tractor solves neither issue. It combines both.

Volker Hack cultivates 170 hectares of mixed arable and vegetable crops in Bobenheim-Roxheim, Germany, including peas, spinach, and potatoes. In his first year with an AgXeed AgBot, he logged 1,200 operating hours without a single road drive, lowering fuel consumption and maintenance costs while maintaining field operations without the need for contractors or additional drivers. His judgement of the soil benefit was straightforward: a lighter machine puts less pressure on the ground, and healthier ground implies more productive crops over time.

What AgXeed Has Built

AgXeed, in Grubbenvorst, the Netherlands, makes a line of completely autonomous tracked field robots known as AgBots, with the latest T2 7 Series producing 230hp from a Stage V-compliant Deutz diesel-electric powertrain. Despite its power, the machine weighs little over eight tonnes and has a ground pressure of 30 kPa, which is significantly lower than the threshold at which soil structural damage generally begins.

The AgBots are ISOBUS and TIM compatible, allowing standard implements with three-point linkage to be operated directly by the system. Farmers can keep their existing implements. They plan operations using AgXeed's TraXwise platform, deploy the machine to the field boundary, and the AgBot does the rest, sowing, tillage, cultivation, and mowing, day and night, watched remotely via four onboard cameras and LiDAR-based obstacle recognition.

AgXeed says that compared to traditional tractors, it may save up to 90% on labour and 25-35% on total operating costs. As NetWorth Farmer, we caution that no independent third-party verification of such numbers across farm types has been released. However, the farmer testimonials have been documented and are consistent.

The Pricing and the European Footprint

The T2 5 Series starts at €265,000. The T2 7 Series, which was launched at Agritechnica in November 2025, is priced from €295,000. Dealers are operating across the Netherlands, Germany, France, and the UK through SoilEssentials in Scotland and Northern England. Investors include Amathaon Capital and CLAAS Group, the latter a strategic endorsement from one of Europe's largest machinery manufacturers.

A wheeled W3 and W4 series at 75hp are available for lighter applications, including specialty crops, flower bulbs, and grassland.

NetWorth Farmer Verdict

Arable and mixed crop operators with acreages of 150 hectares or more that are suffering actual labour constraints and are already using implements that are three-point linkage or ISOBUS compatible. Farmers with heavier soils, when compaction is significantly affecting yield, will find the 30 kPa ground pressure argument very important. The W series is ideal for producers in speciality vegetable, bulb and grassland operations that require lighter autonomous coverage.

Who it is Not Yet For: Smaller operations whose capital costs of €265,000 to €320,000 do not match a reasonable labour-saving calculation. Farms that expect the AgBot to replace a primary tractor for all operations should be aware that it is intended as a complementary autonomous platform rather than a full fleet replacement. The VCU attachment for existing tractors provides a low-cost entry point into supervised autonomy for operators who are not yet ready for full deployment.

Questions to Ask Before Engaging: Is your existing implement fleet ISOBUS compatible? What is your farm's realistic yearly operating hour target, and does the labour savings at that rate cover the capital cost within five years? And, most importantly, what is your local dealer's support and maintenance capabilities, as autonomous systems demand immediate technical reaction when faults develop during operation?

This makes the following possible: A farm operator using an AgBot for overnight cultivation is saving a driver's salary while reducing their seasonal operating window. This enables the operator to finish operations in optimal soil conditions rather than waiting for operator availability and establishes a continuous field data record with TraXwise to improve agronomic decision-making throughout the season. The compaction reduction also provides a long-term yield protection argument that does not appear in a normal one-year ROI assessment but adds up significantly over a decade of healthier soil structure.

Next steps by Persona: Farm operators should contact their nearest AgXeed dealer for a demonstration and request to visit a working customer site. The 600-hour and 1,200-hour testimonials from France and Germany provide the most dependable performance reference available. Investors: the CLAAS Group's strategic endorsement is a strong signal. The aftermarket service model will be investigated, as well as whether AgXeed's dealer network can handle the maintenance complexity of autonomous machinery at scale throughout Eastern European countries with acute manpower shortages and strong adoption potential. Ponda is shaking things up by starting with a plant called bulrush, which is grown on restored wetlands. Giving Shipping Its Clean Fuel: Shipping makes up 90% of international trade and produces an estimated 3% of the world’s greenhouse gases. It is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise. Kvasir Technologies, situated in Copenhagen, has secured €10 million in Series A funding round led by European Energy, EIFO, Maersk Growth and Footprint Fund. The fund is to scale up its patented solvothermal liquefaction process to turn non-edible agricultural and forestry residues into climate-neutral marine biofuel that can replace fossil fuel in existing ship engines with no modifications. Kvasir’s feedstock is lignocellulosic biomass, the most abundant waste biomass on Earth. In other words, crop leftovers, straw and forestry by-products that now have little economic value become the raw material for a fuel the shipping industry badly needs. The company claims its approach preserves over 80% of the combustible energy of the original biomass, and might achieve over 100% reduction in CO2 through carbon sequestration in biochar. Farm waste-powered container ships. That’s not a distant dream. It is what Kvasir is doing in Fredericia, Denmark, now.

Food Is Now Foreign Policy: On June 16th, former French Agriculture Minister Julien Denormandie gave three reasons that European agribusiness executives should carefully consider. First, in terms of sovereignty, "Europe must be willing to produce and willing to export". This frames European agriculture as a geopolitical duty in a world of unstable supply chains and active wars. Second, Denormandie contends that true competition must now be assessed by value, which includes climate, soil health, water, and air quality, rather than just cost. However, he is unusually straightforward about the outcome: "quality food costs more, and we must accept that," supported by economic policy for farmers and social assistance for the most disadvantaged. Third, he warns of a severe disregard of the land itself, pointing out that 60 to 70% of European soils are already damaged, and believes that bringing soil back to the forefront of policy discourse involves restoring respect for the farmers who care for it. Three arguments. One unsettling conclusion: Europe does not yet govern agriculture as the strategic asset it has become.

5,127 Ways Not to Build a Vacuum

James Dyson is Britain's most famous inventor. A knight of the realm. A billionaire. His name is on appliances in households across 65 countries. But for fifteen years before any of that, he was a man alone in a workshop, building things that didn't work.

His concept was straightforward: a vacuum cleaner that did not lose suction. His execution was horrible. Between 1979 and 1984, Dyson produced 5,127 prototypes. Every one failed. His savings were gone. His family was surviving on his wife's salary as an art instructor. Banks refused to touch him. Established manufacturers, such as Hoover and Electrolux, were not interested. One nearly licensed his design before walking away and launching a comparable product themselves. He sued and won. But for the majority of that decade, there was little indication that any of it would ever amount to anything.

Regardless, he continued to build.

The Dyson DC01 was first available in the United Kingdom in 1993. Within two years, it became the best-selling hoover cleaner in the country. The rest is the type of story that business schools display on their walls.

Now look at Monarch Tractor. Founded in 2018 with a Tesla background, the $220 million fundraising round was the largest in agricultural robotics history. When their autonomous tractor technology failed to perform reliably in real-world settings, they did not iterate through 5,000 iterations. They shifted to software, abandoned the difficult problem, and eventually folded, with their assets quietly absorbed by Caterpillar in early 2026.

Contrast is everything. Dyson's lesson was not that he had a superior idea to everyone else. He was more tolerant of the gap between concept and execution than anyone else. He knew that genuine, physical, field-tested gear earns the right to work via repetition rather than revision decks.

Agtech is rife with wonderful concepts that meet the same fate as Monarch: technically viable, commercially premature, and abandoned before the iteration count reached a critical threshold. The seed drill, the combine harvester, and GPS-guided precision planting all failed on the first attempt. They worked because someone continued to construct.

The question for every AgTech founder this week isn't whether their technology is ready. The question is whether you're willing to stay in the workshop long enough to find out. Dyson was. That is the only reason you know his name.
