$7.25 Billion to Close a Chapter Nobody Expected to Last This Long: Bayer has received preliminary approval from a Missouri state court for a $7.25 billion class settlement that addresses thousands of ongoing Roundup cancer claims. A fairness hearing is scheduled for July 9th. The deal, which is set to be funded over a period of up to 21 years, aims to address both current and future claims from individuals who say that long-term exposure to glyphosate led to non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Bayer insists that the herbicide is not linked to cancer and is not taking responsibility for any claims. The settlement comes after a significant US Supreme Court ruling on June 25th, which stops consumers from suing due to the lack of a cancer warning on labels. This decision led to a nearly 19% surge in Bayer's shares in just one day, marking their biggest gain since 2003. Bayer CEO Bill Anderson openly recognised the impact, stating that this litigation has resulted in thousands of job losses and billions that could have been used to develop new medicines or seeds. For European farmers who have depended on glyphosate for weed management for years, it seems like the legal chapter is coming to an end. But now, the questions about what’s next for crop protection are getting even more urgent.
£3 Million to Pick Faster: If there is anyone who truly understands the labor crisis in Europe, it’s the berry growers. That’s why good news for tech in these fields is good news for farmers. Fieldwork Robotics has secured £3 million to transition from validation to commercial deployment. £2.2 million was raised from investors. £1.6 million just came in as a UK climate grant. Innovate UK also supported the project. The company based in Cambridge is currently running a two-year harvesting-as-a-service program with growers in Norfolk and Staffordshire. Next up are the trials in Portugal. Australia is next in line. European soft fruit growers should definitely take a look at the harvesting-as-a-service model. It's something to consider! No need for any upfront investment. No more recruitment headaches. Farmers can get to pay for the harvest, not the equipment.

Belgium's Biofungicide Inches Close: Biotalys, based in Ghent, has just passed an important regulatory milestone. California's Department of Pesticide Regulation is inviting the public to share their thoughts on EVOCA, a protein-based biofungicide, during a 30-day consultation period. This comes after a positive assessment of human health. A final decision should come around the second half of 2026. Why is California's approval important for farmers in Europe? I am glad you asked. It backs up the science, you know? EVOCA goes after grey mould and powdery mildew. Every year, they wreak havoc on European strawberry, tomato, and grape crops. Biotalys was created as a spin-off from VIB in Ghent back in 2013. It's listed on Euronext Brussels. A European commercial launch is set for 2030. The total target market is about $1.1 billion. For investors keeping an eye on the biologicals sector, this is definitely a company worth following closely. It looks like there's some exciting potential in the pipeline for agronomists who are working on fungicide resistance.

AI That Gets Muddy
Most AI systems were built for clean, controlled conditions. AI works beautifully in a data centre with stable power or a warehouse with predictable layouts because the environment cooperates. Here is the problem with deploying AI on a working farm that nobody in a San Francisco boardroom anticipated. Sensors get dusty. Cameras face glare, rain, and mud. GPS loses lock under tree canopies. Rural connectivity drops out across 70% of farmland globally, including across vast stretches of Southern Spain, rural France, and Central and Eastern Europe. A system that works beautifully in a demonstration breaks down within weeks in a real growing season.
This gap between trial performance and field performance is what a new investment category is specifically designed to close. It’s called rugged AI. The definition is deliberate: AI systems that work entirely on-device without cloud dependency, treat weather, terrain, and biological variability as the default condition, and are built modularly so the same core technology can be used across different crops, machines, and industries without rebuilding from scratch.
What a Carlifornia-based Startup Has Built
Bonsai Robotics is Reservoir’s flagship portfolio firm, created in 2022 and situated in San Jose. In 2025, Bonsai acquired farm-ng and now offers the Amiga, a modular electric robotic platform powered by Bonsai Intelligence’s autonomous stack, trained on over 750,000 acres of field data globally. Their approach employs vision-based AI to predict 3D perception directly from camera images, avoiding the need for GPS altogether to navigate and perform tasks.
The Amiga takes care of weeding, precision spraying, scouting, mowing, transporting materials and spreading compost in vineyards, orchards and speciality crop farms. For speciality crops that usually cover around 20 to 200 hectares, you can get a single Amiga unit for about $20,000 to $25,000. This unit can handle tasks that would have needed several seasonal workers working different shifts. Bonsai says it has 45% lower operating expenses and can complete jobs 60% faster compared to traditional methods. These figures come from the company itself, and we haven't seen any independent third-party verification for different types of farms in Europe yet.
The Amiga Max was recognised as one of the Top 10 New Products of 2026 at the World Ag Expo. Bonsai has grown the platform by teaming up with WEED-IT, Carbon Robotics, OnTarget Spray Systems, and Interlink Sprayers. This collaboration has introduced non-chemical and precision chemical weeding and spraying options for the Amiga Flex and Amiga Max models.
The European Position
Sadly, Bonsai Robotics is not yet available in Europe. There are pilot deployments in vineyards, orchards and speciality crop farms throughout California with early commercial traction with small and mid-sized growers in the American West.
But the structural issues it speaks to are acute in Europe. Agricultural workforce shortages have intensified year-on-year across Spain, France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands since 2020. Speciality crop operations such as orchards and vineyards have the most manpower dependency and the least flexibility in time-critical jobs. The iGrow Intelligence 2025 report forecasts autonomous weeding robots will achieve commercial scale in the US and Europe by the end of 2026. European parallel: Swiss AI-guided laser weeding business Ecorobotix concluded a $105M Series D in October 2025, the largest single precision ag robotics deal globally that year, showing European investors see the similar market growing.
Reservoir VC itself describes agriculture as the proving ground, not the ultimate market. Technologies developed in orchards and vineyards, where the AI has to cope with irregular geometry, uncertain ground and biological variation at the single plant level, are directly transferable to mining, forestry, energy and land management. The same vision-based, edge-compute stack that drives a remote inspection truck in a copper mine can drive a Salinas Valley lettuce crop at night, no changes required.
The NetWorth Farmer Verdict
Who it’s for: Speciality crop operators on vineyard, orchard and bedded crop farms in the 20 to 200 hectare range when seasonal labour is the major single expense and operating restriction. Strategic investors are watching harsh AI as an emerging category, apart from general-purpose robotics. They are particularly interested in the question of whether European financing for agricultural robotics should go to platform-layer businesses such as Bonsai or to application-layer companies such as Ecorobotix. AgTech founders who are building weeding, scouting, or spraying apps and want a modular, open hardware platform rather than building their own vehicle from start.
Who it’s not for yet: European farm operators looking to make a buying decision any time soon. Bonsai is not yet available commercially or registered for deployment in Europe. Big open fields where traditional gear can scale efficiently will find the Amiga's current form factor and task range a poor fit relative to cost for arable farmers.

What Farmers are Saying: The results of the world's largest farmer poll to date are uncomfortable to read. Drawing from 10,234 respondents in 158 countries, Wikifarmer's Voice of the Farmer 2026 depicts a sector under increasing strain: more than half of farmers worldwide believe they are not being paid fairly for their labour, nearly one in four report income that is significantly worse than it was a year ago, and 48% place their financial security at the lowest point on a five-point scale. With 56% of farmers reporting a decline in income, Europe has a higher percentage than both South Asia and Africa. With 83% of respondents reporting crop losses due to weather events or pests in the previous year, climate losses exacerbate the financial picture. 63% of farmers gave government assistance a score of one or two out of five. The Shepherds Who Walk Europe Every Summer
The Road Has Always Been Open
Somewhere in the Alps right now, a shepherd is walking.
With determination, he walked the same path that his grandfather, and the grandfather before him, had taken. He was surrounded by thousands of creatures. Upon the flanks, canines. Just one more day until the summer pasture. July has arrived. July in Europe's mountainous regions has always looked like this.
Our term for this phenomenon is transhumance, which comes from the Latin trans humus, meaning "beyond the land." In the spring, shepherds from all over the Alpine, Pyrenean, Apennine, and Carpathian regions coordinate the relocation of their flocks to lush, unspoiled pastures at higher elevations. They put them back up every autumn. Over the course of a thousand years, the cycle has continued unbroken.
When the Mountains Were Europe's Larder
The logic was elegant and ancient. Lowland fields needed rest. Mountain pastures sat empty. Move the animals up, graze the heights through summer, and return them fattened in autumn. Nothing was wasted or left idle.
Mediaeval tax records from Provence tell the tale in numbers: in 1346, just before the Black Death swept through, some 60,000 sheep and ewes had already made the seasonal voyage between mountains and plains. In Languedoc the summer ascension was called la montada, the rising. The rhythm was already alive in the Alps in the 12th century. An entire industry sprang up around it: cheese made at altitude, wool bought in valley markets, the trails worn into the rock by generations of hooves.

The shepherds had something more difficult to barter than wool. They carried knowledge of weather patterns, of grazing rotations, of which herbs foretold healthy soil and which foretold difficulty ahead. It was land management done precisely, with no spreadsheets in sight.
A Tradition the World Just Recognised
In December 2023, UNESCO recognised transhumance as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting ten European countries from Albania all the way to Spain. The timing wasn't just a coincidence. In Europe, we're seeing mountain meadows getting smaller, rural communities growing older, and those old paths are either being covered up or just fading away. 2026 has been named the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists. This is a worldwide recognition that the knowledge these shepherds have about land, seasons, and resilience is far from just nostalgia. It's all about the infrastructure.
Transhumance really shows us something that modern agriculture is still figuring out: it’s all about working with the natural rhythms of the land instead of fighting against them. It helps stop forest fires by keeping the vegetation grazed down. It keeps biodiversity corridors running through whole mountain ranges. It creates soil that can handle drought conditions.
The shepherd walking the Alps this July isn’t just a thing of the past. He's quietly one of the most sophisticated land managers in Europe.
