Can Robots Milk More Than Cows?: On a Dutch dairy farm in Friesland, already run by two Lely milking robots, two Lely manure robots, and a Trioliet feed kitchen, farmer Joram Hofman is now testing an AgXeed W4 autonomous robot for mowing, tedding, and raking grass. The Netherlands, Europe's most automated dairy sector per cow, is a fitting testbed: high labour costs and small family operations have long pushed Dutch farms toward automation before their neighbours. Hofman is clear-eyed about the economics too, noting a full autonomous tractor doesn't suit his 53-hectare farm, but renting time on a robot might. It's a small pilot, but a signal of where field robotics moves next: not just arable cropping, but forage production feeding the milking robots already on the yard.

BASF's Slow-Burn Weed Fix: BASF has kicked off the global registration process for Replexor Active, a new PPO herbicide that tackles both broadleaf weeds and, importantly, resistant grasses like Eleusine indica and Setaria. This is a gap that many current PPO products haven't addressed. Dossiers are currently filed in Brazil and Australia, with the US and Argentina set to follow in 2027, and we're aiming for a market launch around 2030. Every bag of coated fertiliser and every treated seed carries a tiny plastic shell most farmers never think about. Brussels has just put a date on when that has to stop.
The amount of controlled-release fertiliser made around the world in 2021 was estimated to be 197 million tonnes. Imagine a coating that's only 1% of that weight. That means that every year, close to 2 million tonnes of synthetic polymer go straight into fields and irrigation water. Most people don't even notice because it does its job quietly, releasing nutrients or active ingredients slowly instead of all at once. It's a problem that the quiet plastic doesn't stay put. A well-known study from 2021 found that a single plate of ordinary mussels could contain up to 200 microplastic particles. This gives you an idea of how far this trash goes after it leaves the field.
A Coating Without The Plastic
BioCloak, launched in New York in 2024 out of Big Idea Ventures' Generation Food Rural Partners fund, is trying to solve exactly this. Instead of the petroleum based polymer shells used to slow the release of fertiliser and pesticides, its bioencapsulation technology uses biopolymers, lipid membranes and spray dried coatings built from biological material, alongside microbe-based coatings for seed and plant protection. The idea is that a fifty hectare arable holding buying ordinary coated NPK pellets or treated seed today would, in theory, be buying exactly the kind of product BioCloak wants to replace, without changing anything else about how the farm operates.

Why Europe Should Care, Even Without BioCloak Here Yet
BioCloak has no confirmed European presence so far, and this is worth being upfront about. But Europe doesn't really have a choice about the underlying problem. Under EU Regulation 2023/2055, coated fertilisers not already covered by the Fertilising Products Regulation must be microplastic free by October 2028, and treated seed and plant protection products follow by 2031. That gives European input manufacturers a hard deadline whether or not any single company wins the contract to replace the coating.

We live in a culture that glorifies independence. Be self-sufficient. Don't rely on anyone. Stand on your own two feet. There's real value in resilience, and no one is arguing against it. But carried too far, this mindset breeds loneliness, and loneliness eventually shows up in the work itself. It shows up in decisions made too rigidly, in help never asked for. The truth is, identity was never meant to be a solo project.

Think about farming. You may own the land, plant the seed, and pull every weed yourself. But rain falls from the sky, not from your hands. It takes generations of unseen life for soil to become fertile, not just your efforts. You need help from powers outside of yourself to reap even the best harvest.
