Agtech's Exit Problem Just Got a Fix: Too many good agtech startups have shut down too soon, not because the technology wasn't good enough, but because they ran out of money. Reservoir, an agtech startup and venture capital firm based in California, bought Contain, a fintech platform that has been helping agricultural tech companies get loans from non-traditional lenders and equipment financing for almost a decade. This purchase directly addresses the structural problem at hand. Nicola Kerslake, founder of Contain, has joined Reservoir as a general partner. She will be in charge of underwriting and due diligence, and most importantly, she will help shape Reservoir's second fund thesis, which is about "rugged AI": software-enabled hardware designed for fields and farms where dust, weather, and mechanical wear are normal conditions. The fund's main point is: venture capital alone is not enough to build up capital-intensive AgTech hardware, and the companies that succeed will have access to a mix of capital sources, including debt, leasing, and equity. This is the funding plan that European AgTech founders who are making physical products in robotics, precision equipment, or self-driving systems should pay the most attention to in 2026.

Validation Happens in Fields, Not Boardrooms: There is something quietly telling about two British agtech companies flying to the other side of the world to prove their technology works. Breedr, a livestock data platform, and Biotangents, a rapid animal diagnostics company, have been selected by the UK Agri-Tech Centre for its 2026 Global Growth Accelerator Australasia programme. They will be sent to New Zealand's commercial farms to validate their solutions in one of the world's most demanding and respected livestock and dairy environments. New Zealand's farmers are famously pragmatic; if it works there, it works. The closest validation environment to your customer is not always the most credible one. Sometimes the most powerful proof of concept requires the longest flight. European investors and buyers increasingly want global evidence, not regional pilots.

Agreenculture Buys the Brains: It's one thing to drive autonomously through a vineyard. Knowing what is wrong with the vines is another. French autonomous machinery specialist Agreenculture has acquired Chouette, an AI-powered agronomic analysis firm for viticulture, and will combine its autonomous technology with Chouette's crop-monitoring algorithms to create machines that can function independently and analyse their observations in the field. Chouette's technology employs tractor-mounted sensors to capture high-resolution field imagery, which is then processed to detect powdery mildew, esca, missing vines and canopy vigour, resulting in georeferenced vineyard health maps from a dataset of over 200 million images spanning 64,000 hectares and eleven growing seasons. The businesses intend to expand the technology beyond vineyards into orchards, with the combined platform eventually being folded into autonomous solutions available to equipment makers. The acquisition fills a gap that has silently harmed autonomous agriculture's economic promise: a system that can navigate a field without a driver but cannot distinguish between a healthy and a diseased vine is only half of the solution. Agreenculture recently acquired the other half.

Giving Slugs Nowhere Left to Hide: Slugs cost European arable farmers hundreds of millions of euros in lost produce each season. The only solution has been to cover entire fields with pellets and hope for the best. SLIMERS, a UK research project coordinated by the British On-Farm Innovation Network and financed by Defra's Farming Innovation Programme, is nearing the end of its trials on over 100 farms. Harper Adams University researchers created a predictive algorithm that identifies slug hotspots within fields, using two years of farmer-generated monitoring data and comprehensive soil mapping. This allows for targeted treatment of high-risk zones. Along with the mapping effort, partners Fotenix and UK Agri-Tech Centre are creating AI-powered multispectral imaging for in-field slug identification, while Farmscan Ag is developing an automated spray system with ultra-narrow 25cm application widths for precision biological control using nematodes. This development promises a viable, commercially accessible slug control solution for UK and European growers by the end of 2026.

Glyphosate does not vanish after it lands. It binds to soil minerals, chelates essential nutrients, and inhibits the microbial organisms that make the ground productive. Approximately 55% of native beneficial soil bacteria contain the gene that glyphosate targets. It suppresses beneficial bacteria and fungus in the natural soil microbiome, binding to and storing macronutrients required for crop growth.

This is the part of the herbicide issue that gets lost in the shuffle of the cancer debate. Whether a farmer accepts the health concerns of glyphosate or not, the soil productivity effects are real and compound quietly with each application. This residue problem is a product of decades of conventional arable farming in Europe and North America and no one has had a commercially viable tool to handle it. arguably until now.

What Ancient Organics Has Built

Ancient Organics Bioscience, situated in San Luis Obispo, California, will commercialise PaleoPower in 2023. Raul Cano, a microbiologist, founded the company, which has developed a patented consortium of naturally occurring microorganisms that produce enzymes capable of degrading the chemical bonds of glyphosate and its primary breakdown metabolite AMPA, releasing nutrients that were previously locked up and allowing the native soil bacterial community to re-establish itself.

Two independent controlled experiments discovered that a single treatment reduced soil glyphosate and AMPA levels by more than 80% after 90 days and over 90% within 180 days. Field trials spanning numerous US states and more than 60,000 acres revealed a 15.7% increase in soil organic matter, a 167% increase in microbially active carbon, and a 10 to 20% increase in water-retaining capacity. The product is OMRI certified for organic use and is administered once before planting and again after harvest.

Advisory credibility is not light. Dr. Don Huber, Professor Emeritus at Purdue University and a 50-year expert on soil-borne plant pathogens, advises on field trial design and execution and has co-authored peer-reviewed scientific articles on the findings with founder Raul Cano.

The European Angle

PaleoPower is not registered in Europe. Commercial availability is currently limited to the United States, with Canada's registration planned in 2026. NWF mentions this clearly.

The regulatory trend makes this story particularly relevant to European readers right now. In November 2025, Europe's General Court decided that EU officials had manipulated pesticide approval processes to keep glyphosate on the market for longer than the law permitted, concluding that the European Commission had transformed short-term extensions into a back-door renewal mechanism. The European Commission renewed glyphosate's EU clearance for another ten years in 2023, although some member states, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Austria, have imposed partial national prohibitions. A company that holds a US patent for glyphosate bioremediation, backed by a validated microbial platform and a solid scientific advisory board, finds itself in a unique spot in the European market, especially as the regulatory landscape for its main application is currently evolving.

Pricing isn't available for the public to see. The funding stage and who the investor is haven't been shared, and NWF points out that this leaves a bit of a gap for understanding the investor persona. The independent controlled studies are mentioned, but they aren't linked to specific peer-reviewed publications in the public materials. It's something the agribusiness advisor should check out before making any recommendations.

AI's Dirty Little Secret Is Out: The most expensive thing in artificial intelligence is not the compute. It is the data, the training, and the years of research it takes to build a frontier model. Which is precisely why what Anthropic has accused Alibaba of matters so much. According to a letter sent by Anthropic to US senators and White House officials, operators linked to Alibaba's Qwen AI lab ran a coordinated campaign using nearly 25,000 fraudulent accounts to extract 28.8 million exchanges from Anthropic's Claude model between April and June, a practice Anthropic characterised as the largest known attempt by a Chinese company to harvest a leading US AI lab's capabilities. The technical term is adversarial distillation: using another model's outputs to train your own at a fraction of the cost, and without the safety guardrails the original was built with. Alibaba's stock dropped 3% on the news.

Have a Break. Save the Soil: Nestlé has started using regeneratively farmed British wheat in the production of 1.5 billion KitKat bars each year at its York factory. They’ve teamed up with Wildfarmed, a British regenerative food company, whose farmers stick to strict principles. These include minimising soil disturbance, keeping the soil covered all year round, boosting crop diversity, and ensuring there are always living roots in the ground. 51% of the wheat in each bar comes from Wildfarmed, and Nestlé has promised to boost that percentage as time goes on. The taste and that classic snap are still just as you remember them. What’s different now is what goes on before the wheat even gets to York. This move shows that sourcing in a regenerative way at a massive scale, over a billion units each year, is something that can actually be done.

A Warning Sign Nobody Knew to Look For: Every year, a lot of people unexpectedly lose their lives to cardiac arrest. This often occurs without any prior signs and with heart scans that looked perfectly normal. It seems like doctors have been depending on the wrong test to figure out risk. A recent study published in Nature has changed that. Researchers developed a deep learning model using hundreds of thousands of ECGs, which are those straightforward electrical heart traces you can find in nearly every clinic. They connected this data to death records from Sweden, the United States, and Taiwan. The AI found a new pattern in the ECG waveform that predicts sudden cardiac death more accurately than the standard cardiac ultrasound measure we currently use. It's pretty significant that 86% of the patients the AI identified as high risk were completely overlooked by the current screening methods. Patients in the high-risk group who already had defibrillators fitted were 54% less likely to die than what we would expect. The test is affordable, quick, and readily accessible everywhere.

Your Soil Needs a Probiotic: Nina Vinot has dedicated her career to exploring the connection between gut health and agronomy. Her main point is: the same biological principles that allow probiotics to function in our digestive systems also apply to the soil we walk on. Agriculture hasn’t really started to take this into account. Vinot, the business development director at French agri-biotech company Cybèle Agrocare, highlights that since the 1950s, the micronutrient content in fruits, vegetables, and cereals has dropped quite a bit. This decline is because chemical agriculture has slowly removed the biological complexity from soils, making it harder for plants to access the minerals they need. The comparison she makes is spot on: just like 30% of the energy in breast milk supports the human microbiome, plants also put about 30% of their energy into root exudates to attract helpful microbes. The issue is that agriculture doesn't really track or reward nutritional quality, and testing the soil microbiome is pricey and not done very often. Until farmers get compensated for what their soil truly produces, rather than just the quantity, the divide between gut science and agronomy will stay broader than it ought to be.

Everyone in the village knew him as the man who always had a plan. Drought? He would adjust. Did the markets really collapse? He'd figure something else out. His neighbours referred to him as unshakeable. His kids believed he was made of something special that set him apart from everyone else.

What they didn't realise was that he hadn't had a good night's sleep in four months. He would sit in his truck at the end of the driveway some evenings, engine off, just not able to bring himself to go inside. It was like the weight of three tough seasons, a bank review, and a son who had moved to the city had slowly added up to something he couldn’t quite put his finger on.

He didn't say anything at all. Farmers typically don't, you know? We’re the ones who get things done. We just keep moving forward.

Agriculture shows you the importance of paying attention to everything around you. Soil moisture. Leaf colour. Animal behaviour. The tiniest hints that something isn't quite right. We interpret our land as if it's a language.
